Trading Isolation and Loneliness for Connection, Love and Wholeness
Addiction and Suicide Intervention for Families
As the parent of a child in her early twenties, I live in dread that someday I’ll get a call saying that something terrible has happened to my daughter. I’m praying that that day never comes, WHILE doing everything I can to make certain that she can FEEL MY LOVE, because I’ve learnt, from experience, that suicide and addiction are extreme reactions to the pain of FEELING UNWORTHY or UNLOVABLE.
Addiction and suicide never occur in a vacuum – they occur within a context of relationship, family and culture (even in those cases where all contact with one’s family or culture has long been severed).
MY CONTRIBUTION TO HIS/HER CHANGE
One of my most challenging life-lessons was discovering that “I can’t change what is going on inside another human being”. MY SUPERPOWER is an ability to sincerely communicate to them that they are acceptable and lovable EXACTLY the way that they are.
There is nothing in the world more challenging for us than accepting character traits like cruelty, manipulation, exploitation, selfishness, victimhood and deceit and this renders Unconditional Acceptance near impossible. My vocation is to provide specialized training to family members who are developing their capacity to ACCEPT people without any conditions whatsoever. The work that these family members do has a ripple effect on others in the family and on the youth, or young adult, that they’re concerned about.
NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART
When the situation in your family has reached a point where some form of intervention is necessary to prevent harm, the emotional investment required to turn things around is substantial and the process takes time. I have developed a curriculum that expedites the transformational process, and powerful tools that make integration easier.
